Next Meeting

Date: Tuesday, April 22, 2003
Time: 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Location: Garfield High School Library
Agenda: AFE, By-Laws, Fall Event

Alliance For Education Performance Contract
The purpose of the AFE is to be a catalyst for change - so that all kids can be successful in all schools. As part of this mission, they support the transformation process in the schools and act as a Fiscal sponsor for schools as a 501(c)(3) entity.

AFE income comes from unrestricted donations, some foundation grants and fees.

Costs related to use of AFE as GHSF fiscal sponsor:
  • School Account - AFE retains interest for the first $25,000. AFE prepares thank-yous to donors, but if on GHSF letterhead, we cover cost of letterhead.
  • Endowment Account – All money pooled and invested ($6 million pool currently), with fees divided proportionately. Hand-out re. investment policies. Fees include those of the management firms and a 1% cut of the average monthly balance for AFE (Seattle Foundation charges the same fee). Typically, fees to AFE do not cover administrative costs – AFE subsidizes administration of accounts to some extent.
Branding GSHF materials – Could do this , with a paragraph re: AFE role.

AFE prepares tax documents at end of year – legally needs to be stated. GSHF would not need to prepare a separate tax return. If GHSF is not a 501(c)(3), then we are a "Donor-Advised Fund" of AFE.

Ballard Foundation is its own 501(c)3 – maybe would not do that, if starting now (per Dick Lee). Donor Relationships – GHSF donors would be contacted by AFE for annual campaign once per year. Discussion of "Opt_In" vs. "Opt-Out" for donors – One mail solicitation and one telephone call. AFE would have serious problem with Opt-Out, but maybe no telephone call?.

Data Base – AFE now has 15,000 donors. Names can be sorted by Foundation.

GHSF would need – Contact person, person to sign checks, and PO Box. GHSF would have access to account balance from AFE office.

Fall Event
Looked at the Recital Hall at Benaroya. Seats 540, theater style. Would have wine and heavy hors d’oeuvres in the Lobby. 6:30 – 8:30 pm. One-hour program. Cost – for a non-profit on a Thursday night, $500.00. Also, $300.00 plus food. Anticipate about a 10% response to invitations. Table Captains will get more response. Maybe "Class Captains"? The invitations are important item, and should be well thought out. Discussion re. alternative - a sit-down dinner in the Lobby. Will be more expensive, but could get October 22 or November 5. Judith to bring back a budget for the next meeting. Try to have video of school history.

GHSF Database
Ben will write our on-line program. We need to get Class lists. Database Committee to meet.

Donor Strategies/Development Committee
Need to get this group going. Joyce Walker will assist.
